Juan and the Carabao in the Organization

A neighbor paid Juan to feed their carabao in the field.  So went Juan off the field far away from their home where the grasses are healthy and abundant.  Arriving in the field, he left the carabao to feed on his own and Juan went to the nearby coconut tree and took a nap.

However, Juan did not notice that there was a dried well in the middle of the field.  And since the field was covered with healthy tall grasses, it is not visible to animals and humans.  So goes the carabao, unknowingly continued to eat grasses until he accidentally fell off the dried well.  The carabao tried to climb up, but the well was deep enough for him to climb up.  Tired and exhausted, he almost gave up.  So for a while, he rested and gathered strength.

An hour after, Juan woke up and went to the field and looked for the carabao only to learn that it is missing.  He looked around and there he found the dried well.  As he looked down below, he saw the carabao.  Afraid and confused on what to do, he thought of how he would get the carabao off the well.  But he said that it’s difficult and a waste of his time.  Anyway he will just look for another carabao to cover up for what happened and will return to the owner.

So he decided to leave.  But for once, he thought that if he will leave the carabao in the well, it will eventually die and will smell bad.  So he decided to cover up the dried well and bury the carabao there.  So Juan went to look for a shovel and went back to the field and started to cover the well.

On the other hand, the carabao, upon knowing what Juan is planning, felt bad.  He thinks that it is going to be his end.  So as Juan throws soil to the well, it hits the carabao and it pains him.  It bleeds his heart.  The carabao, with a positive attitude just shook it off as it hits him and then he would step off it.

Unknowingly, the carabao continued to step off the soil thrown at him and didn’t noticed that he was almost near the opening of the well. Little by little, the soil thrown at the carabao that was intended to bury him ended up saving him until he got out of the well.  How he got out of the well despite how he was planned to be buried lies in the manner the carabao’s attitude in facing his difficulties.

The story above can be likened to our organization. There will always be Juan who victimizes and preys like the carabaos.  Instead of helping them, they pull them down, worst, bury them.  There will always be managers like Juan who should not be in the organization.  Likewise, it is a challenge to the carabaos if they are faced by many Juans.  They should work harder or hardest and in the end they will emerge the Winner.  And Juan, from the very beginning is the Loser.

Norton Internet Security 2013: An Invaluable Investment

Share

Human Resources Management is making use of Information Technology and uses it to manage and keep up with business strategy of the organization.  As such the Human Resources Information System(HRIS) was conceptualized.  The HRIS automates major HR processes such as payroll, time-keeping, employee records and more.  Thus, its importance and safety should not be taken for granted and a need to protect that system is very important.

Many computer users assume that Internet security is simply for big businesses with top-secret information, closely guarded intellectual properties, and millions of dollars in the bank. Of course they’re a rather obvious target for cyber theft, but as business changes and more individuals work in small businesses or even for themselves, this is beginning to change.

Now, not only Fortune 500 companies and their ilk need to be protected against intrusion, theft, and deliberate mishandling of information, Medium and small businesses and even individuals who are their own employers need Internet protection as well.  We recommend Norton Internet Security 2013 as your solution to this risk as it is also ideal for private individuals who keep their personal financial records and passwords on their computers.

As a first-quality firewall is a must, Symantec has long been known for this and has continued to be a leader in the industry. In order to keep out thieves and mischief-makers, Norton Internet Security 2013 offers the very latest in protection against viruses, malware, adware, spyware, phishing, spam, Rootkit, and other unwelcome entities.

Viruses slow down computers and can even cause whole systems to crash.  Even if nothing is stolen, the cost of repair, restoration, and work time lost can be drastic. Wouldn’t it make sense to invest a few dollars installing Norton Internet Security 2013 instead? One license is good for 3 computers, so this makes it a wise investment.

If cybercriminals get into your payroll and employee records, you could be sued for it, and a lawsuit is far more expensive than Norton Internet Security 2013. Considering how little it costs to use this amazing product, and how much it could cost to leave your system unprotected, Norton Internet Security is the smart choice.  As we geared up towards efficiency and risk free working environment, safety is a must.

Work Ethics during the Christian and Age of Reformation

Share

Work ethics as influenced by the Christian thought, still regarded as a punishment from God after committing sin by eating the fruit of knowledge. However, Christian thought introduced the idea that work, despite a punishment has a brighter side of it. Man has to work to earn and to be productive. Work taught man to be self-reliant, to be hard working and to be persevering. Christian doctrines taught man to share his blessings to others.

Likewise, it taught man to focus not on the physical things of the world but to give importance on the more and higher purpose of man’s labor. Moreover, the Christian Church eyed on the social structure man occupies in the hierarchy of society. Sharing of wealth and blessings to the poor were acceptable while those wealthy men who loaned money and earn interest or overpriced goods were widely considered unacceptable.

The kind of work man holds was related to his social status. St. Thomas Aquinas developed a hierarchy of profession and trades where agricultural works ranked first, handicrafts next and commerce as the third. St. Aquinas referred these works as the work of the world as compared to those of the church clergy whose task is considered a higher category. It was the monastic life that was considered as the most ideal occupation one has to dream for. For St. Aquinas, no matter what work you have, worldly or monastery works, each persons endeavor is a result God’s calling, and it is the responsibility of the person to work and remain in his class and pass it down to his family. A father who is a carpenter has to pass on to his son his calling as a carpenter. Thus, the son’s occupation as he grows up will have to be a carpenter.

The medieval period considered work as just mere work with the purpose of providing for the needs of the family and community. The people thought that having no work means being idle and having no work is a sin. They believed that work is part of God’s plan.

The period of Reformation, is characterized by religious and political outcry. Not only it changed the history of the church but as also brought new revolution to the concept and how we view work. Two religious leaders influenced this era, Martin Luther and John Calvin.

Luther who was an Augustinian friar who was dissatisfied with the Catholic Church led the Protestant movement. He believed that man can better serve God with the kind of work they have or the kind of profession and that work is a primary element in the society. He likewise believed that men should work diligently and earnestly and not change his profession to which he was born. And doing so would be to go against God’s law since God gave us a specific place in this world.

Luther also believed that what the medieval period believed that the monastic and contemplative life as egoistic on the part of the monks or people working in the monastery. Luther argued that a person’s vocation was equated as his calling and all callings are of spiritual dignity.

Moreover , Luther believed that a person into a business is not considered as a work. Men should earn a living enough only to meet his basics needs believed that “man” should not accumulate or horde wealth as it is considered as a sinful act.
A new revolution took place when John Calvin, another counterpart of Martin Luther that introduced theological doctrines combined with those ideas of Martin Luther. John Calvin, a French theologian believed on the concept of predestination. He believed that God chooses those persons to inherit eternal life and all other people were damned and nothing can change that since god is unchanging.
Calvin believed that it’s impossible to know with certainty whether the person in one of the Elect, but rather, a person can sense it based on his personal experiences and encounters with God and all his successes in life. Calvin believed that the person’s daily life and deeds, and his success in the worldly endeavors was a sign that he is possibly included as one of the chosen Elect. A person who shows indifferent and is idle was certainly damned.

Calvin said that man has to work because to work is God’s will. It was mans duty to serve and serve as God’s instrument and reshape the world in the manner God fashioned his Kingdom. Men should not crave and lust over wealth or possessions or easy living but rather to reinvest over and over again. Using the profits to help other people and to rise from an oppressor. . He likewise believed that men who help other people rise from a lesser level of subsistence is to violate God’s will. Moreover, using profits to help others rise from a lesser state violates God’s will since people who want to be among the Elect should do it out of their own hardwork.

Calvinist believed that selecting an occupation and pursuing it in order to achieve profit is a religious duty. Unlike Martin Luther, john Calvin believed that it is proper for man to look for an occupation which will give him greater income. If the pursuit means abandoning the family trade or profession, the change will not be allowed.  The teachings and beliefs of Luther and Calvin lead to a greater understanding and meaning of work ethics.

The next article will present more historical background on how it evolved over the years.

Historical Background of Work Ethics

Share

This is the second part on the series of articles on work Ethics

In all societies, ethics has been regarded as a guiding principle.  There are various ethical principles and one of which is work ethics, business ethics and more.  Whatever that is, it just the same concept- that is doing good and that which is right and just.

From the universal concept of ethics, how did work ethics evolved?

Historically, we can trace its roots in the Bible specifically in the Book of Genesis during the creation of the universe, and the creation of man and woman.  God commanded Adam and Eve to work and to care for the world.  It was a most noble, perfect and worthy kind of work not until they disobeyed God by eating the fruit of the forbidden tree.  Since then, man had to toil and labor hard.  We can find in the many books of the Holy Bible describing work as a punishment and that man has to work hard in order to live and survive.

Greeks and Hebrews alike regarded work as a curse by God.  The society has labeled work in such a way that the poor had to labor hard and the few elite and the rich reaps the fruit of the labor of their slaves.  Plato and Aristotle in their philosophies emphasized why majority of men have to labor hard so that the few elite and the minority can engaged themselves in the more higher degree of work that is to think, exercise and run the political systems and to explore arts and other aesthetic activities.

In the early times, the Jews, Hebrews, Greeks and many other societies regarded “manual labor” as low and degrading.  In fact in many early societies, many of the laborers were the slaves of the rich and the elite.

The Romans likewise had similar concept regarding work with that of the Greek.  They adopted much of their beliefs and practices.  TheRoman Empire utilized slavery and was integral in their day to day operation.  The Romans relied much on their slaves to do most of its work.  For them, their slaves mean nothing and were treated without dignity, without any rights as individuals.

It was during the Medieval period, when the Roman Empire fell that the Christian thought were more evident and dominatedEurope.  However, in this period, work was still considered as a punishment.  What was different was the thought that work has to be labored hard for the benefit of man such that they will not have to rely with charities of other people.  Man has to work hard to be self-sufficient, to be self-reliant and be productive.

During this time, work ethics was on its primitive stage.  No one in the societies dared to stand up against the oppression and slavery.  The next article will present how the Age of Christianity and Reformation had influenced much to the development of the concept and principle of work ethics.

Work Ethics

We often hear the word “work ethics.” This concept has long been a belief by many that serves as a guiding principle if we want an organization to succeed and excel in the tough global competition. Moreover, work ethics sums up an organizations image and credibility in the society.

Much of the problems arising in all organizations are linked to issues involving work ethics. Many CEO’s and Executives who ran short of managing their business properly have something to do with work ethics.

But the question that faces the global industry is determining what is acceptable and what is not as far as work ethics is concerned. What are the guiding principles that all men, not withstanding a persons rank in the corporate ladder, should abide. Much research and debate has been going around bringing down the concept into a much concrete and realistic guide that is easily understood, practiced and embodied in the heart and lives of men.

In the next series of articles, let’s take a closer look of how work ethics has evolved over time and discuss issues that concern the proper adherence of work ethics.

Job Satisfaction: Re-examining you current work situation.

Share

Successful organizations were brought about by their employees who continuously showed their hard work, diligence, perseverance, loyalty and put up all their efforts and their best in whatever task they are doing. They are not just having their jobs done; they are making their careers at work.

I can still vividly recall my previous work where we have to work for more than 24 hours straight just to meet the target. We were all exhausted but we were still working earnestly and we never complained. We were aiming to achieve our goals and be the best among the rest. And all our efforts paved way. Though there were no monetary rewards, but the personal satisfaction was more important.

There are so many people working hard not because they just want to work but because they want to prove and achieve something. I remember a man who worked as a janitor for more than 20 years in the same company whose salary is not that rewarding. He works so diligently with passion that the office would be dirty if he is absent. He cleans so well. In one encounter where we had lunch together in a “carenderia” I remember him telling me that he cleaned the entire office as if it was his own house. He feels so happy knowing he had done his best.

Looking at our respective work, have we done our best? Do we treat our job as a mere work? Or as a vocation? Do we put our heart in it?

While many would like to make their job a satisfying one, there are just so many who can’t. We can’t blame these people as they have their own motivational factors. They have their own drive that would propel them to work hard and do their best.

After all, what is really more important is that you love what you are doing. That’s what matters most.

Rehiring: Important Matters to Consider

Share

In as much as the numbers of people who are leaving the organization is getting high, so does the rate of people returning to the organization. Dr. John Sullivan refers these people as “Boomerangs”. They are the alumni of the organization.

What are the reasons why this occurs? These people are either carefully selected to be hired back or they simply re-apply again. Much of the work of recruiting people is focused on determining the desirable traits their soon to be employees should possess, so does the Recruiter should also take time to list down the qualities a “boomerang” should possess.

HR should consider these peoples’ past performance. Had they been productive while they were employed by the organization? Had they contributed to the success of the team? What are the value-added essentials they possess that the organization feels their need to be rehired?

Decisions of rehiring people should be carefully made if these people will contribute and lead the team towards the attainment of its goals and objectives. Most multi-national companies strategically do the rehiring of employees if the skills of those people are still beneficial and crucial to its success. I’ve seen many executives and highly technical skilled people being rehired.

Another consideration HR should also focus is the effect it has on its existing employees. Will the rehiring boost morale or will it cause people problem? If there are available talents within the organization that can fill-in the existing vacancy, then rehiring is not the answer. That way, people will be motivated as they can see that their career path is leading them to a better future.
